Sorry to start another thread cluttering up the board when so many are jack hammering F5 to see if @GabeD or @mitchell4d have any updates.. but I'm just thinking out loud here.

Sterk was told that the University would like to stay around the same salary that was being paid to Odom to start their new coach on. Sterk knew that there was no way he could get a sitting P5 coach or a "splash" guy for that. He conducted some interviews, gauged interest, knew that a few of his higher profile targets wouldn't sit down with him until this Sunday, so he went to the board with what he had at the time and basically said... "here's what your proposed salary get's us... out of these three I prefer Anderson... you on board or what?" Once the board saw the list, it opened their eyes to what it was going to take financially to secure a coach more in tune with what they want. Sterk was told to get back out there and make it happen.
Will the BOC approve a contract in the range of what Sterk will need to offer? Who knows. Would Sterk have actually hired Blake Anderson if the BOC would have green lighted it? Maybe... but this is where I think I'm giving Sterk too much credit. I think Sterk knew what he's been doing this whole time and played the BOC to get more money. Now he's going to offer a guy like Harsin or Kiffin or Sark (who my source still insists talked to Sterk and is mulling it over, even though this has been shot down by other people in the know) 4.5-5 mil per and tell the BOC "if you want steak, you gotta pay for steak... if you want a f*cking bologna sandwich, then let me take your original petty ass offer and call this cat named Willie Fritz."
But what if Sterk is in fact completely screwing this thing up, and on top of that, he has rubbed people the wrong way at his own University so much that some on the BOC are ready to axe him. Obviously, terminating the AD in the midst of a coaching search is a complete disaster and would be the icing on the cake we've been fed the last 5 days. What if someone on the BOC (maybe JS) back channeled the coaching search, found a big time candidate, and offered the scenario of "come coach at Mizzou, and we will fire Jim Sterk and we will hire an AD that you are comfortable with if at all possible." Obviously that couldn't work in every situation, but I wonder if anything like that has ever been done?
