A couple of interesting stats I found:
- Average defensive efficiency ranking of teams Mizzou lost to this season… 18. Mizzou didn’t lose to a team with a defensive efficiency greater than 40. The first team Mizzou would potentially run into with a defensive efficiency below 40 wouldn’t be until the Sweet 16 if Creighton makes it that far. Utah State is 64th, Arizona 41st and Baylor 104th.
- Average 3P% defensive ranking of the teams Mizzou lost to… 31. The worst being A&M at 82nd in the country. The first team Mizzou would play with a 3P% defensive rating better than 82nd? Baylor if they make the Sweet 16. Utah State is 211th, Arizona is 99th and Creighton is 193rd.
If you are looking at the profile of teams that Mizzou lost to, it’s teams that all play borderline elite defense and in particular teams that play strong 3-point defense.
70 has been the magic number all year. There isn’t a ton supporting Utah State being able to keep us below that threshold. And you can make a compelling case Arizona wouldn’t be able to either, especially with their awful turnover rate. This could be a very special weekend if the three pointer is falling for Mizzou.
