Kim Anderson starts by congratulating Mark Whitehead and Dan Leibovitz on their new roles as head of officiating and associate commisioner.
Anderson said the new strength coach is trying to change the culture and toughness of the team, and is doing a good job with that.
Said they're excited about the opportunity to play in Italy in August, saying the 10 days of practice they'll get is the most beneficial thing.
Anderson says they are still recruiting guys for their 2 open spots, but the pool isn't as great at this point in the summer.
Asked again about Italy, Anderson reiterates how big it is to prepare for the season, as the staff gets more direct contact with players because of the trip. They won't practice in Italy but get four games there, and ten practices beforehand.
Anderson said putting together a non-conference schedule is an art. The SEC asks teams to stay in a 3-year RPI rank with their opponents. Says they won't play a lot of teams in the 300-RPI rank; says it's mostly in the 150-200. Said they can do better in scheduling, too, though. Says a good non-conference schedule also helps the league overall, too.
Anderson said he doesn't have a cut-off date for when he'll decide for sure to use or not use those two open scholarships, but then adds that if there is a timeline, it would be late July/ early August. Also mentions that if they use both scholarships this year and one isn't a 5th-year guy, they would have no scholarships next year because of the lost scholarship to the infractions.
Anderson said the league has a chart of every team in D-1. Main note is every team has their 3-year RPI average, and the league wants every team the SEC schedules to have a 175 RPI average. So you could schedule a 200 team, but would have to offset it with a 150 team, too.
Asked which guys are standing out among the newcomers, Anderson said they're getting good leadership from the guys who are coming back. Says he doesn't want to single anyone out, but mentions Reed Nikko -- who is still hurt -- as a guy whose effort he is pleased with.
And that's it.
