As I have posted here several times, I an proud to share two alma maters with Michael Scherer--Mizzou and MICDS. I am a 1973 MI graduate and my brothers are 1968, 1971 and 1977 CDS graduates.
I told my family at the start of the year, "I just want to have my picture taken with Michael Scherer when he gets his piece of the Rock M after we beat Arkansas."
Of course, the prospect of that happening grew dimmer after Mike's injury and our first half yesterday. I thought the biggest highlight of the game was just being there with both our sons, wearing official factory sample jerseys given to us by our older son's friend who works as a designer in the Nike college football branding department. The temperature seemed to drop about 15 degrees at the start of the third quarter but we stayed in our next-to-last row seats through the end.
After singing the alma mater, our youngest son (a Mizzou grad), said "Come on, Mom. We're going to get your picture taken with Mike Scherer." My husband grabbed my monogrammed Mizzou tote bag and I followed my three men through the stand, to the north end zone, down the hill (without falling on my face) to where the players were coming up the hill. I walked up to Mike, introduced myself, told him our connection and he graciously posed for a picture, taken by both my sons just to be sure we had it. He could not have been more polite or tolerant of an old lady with a big crush.
Just after that, Mike and his family posed with Donavin Newsom in front of the Rock M and dozens of people took pictures. As I do every time I get an chance to meet a player's mom, I thanked Mike's mom for raising such a fine young man who represents both my schools with such class. She had this message for us all: "Pray for him."
We're all praying and pulling for you, Mike. Thanks for being a True Son and making this old lady's day.
