We’ve reached the halfway point in the 2022 football season.
We are 2-4. The schedule this year was front loaded a bit. When @KSU, @Auburm, GA, @Florida sequence was announced I knew we had a tough road to hoe.
The optimist in me says we are fighting every game and we are literally 3 plays away from 5-1. That is what makes this start so frustrating——the way it has happened.
Here is how I see it right here:
Unparalleled success and (let’s be honest) a bit of a surprise—-the defense is salty. Carnell is a monster out there. Charleston and Carlie’s and Ennis have flashed. McGuire is held on nearly every play—-still cannot believe GA wasn’t called for holding on the big pass play to their TE late when their left tackle had his elbow wrapped around McGuire’s neck!!! Hopper is amazing. Jeff coat and Robinson and Landry—-they are all flashing!.
Brady Cook is a QB that isn’t going to win you games. He’s not flashy. Not gaudy with statistics. He has been decent. But decent doesn’t cut it in the SEC. The sad part about today is he played a helluva game minus about 2-3 throws. Clearly his best game as a Tiger in fact. The play he made on the errant snap was UNREAL. Took some serious wheels to chase that down and what a remarkable play to have the sense to pick it up and throw it away and save 20 yards of field position. Just an unbelievable EFFORT play.
Now to the bad on Brady. You absolutely CANNOT throw those 2 INTs. Looked to me that Florida was guilty of PI on one if not both plays…but sadly no calls. One (1) penalty against the Gators all day. One??? Also bad…and I fully admit I do not know exactly what plays are called so I could be way off base. But, it looks like we run a LOT of zone read plays. Well Brady doesn’t seem to “read” anything. When he hands off, it sure looked like open field had he kept. And there must be some easy tells playing against MIZZOU because whenever he DOES actually keep on zone read it looks like the back could WALK in to the EZ.
Brady is right now a C - grade as a QB. Great kid. Easy to cheer for. Great story. But in the SEC….
I think the time has come to play Horn. At least start the development process. Doesn’t mean you bench BC completely——just need to know what’s in the cupboard. This is necessary because —-next year is the year. It’s always been the pivotal year for Drink. You need to show progress. Next year the schedule eases up a bit. Lots of the toss up games are home. And GA game showed what MIZZOU COULD have as far as an environment.
Drink’s future.
I’m in the camp that he has been a significant upgrade as far as recruiting and many other aspects. But at the end of the day, it comes down to wins, We won’t get anywhere with the revolving door of coaches. Any long term Mizzou fan knows all too well the consequences of chasing that strategy. But, the transfer portal is a game changer really.
Like it or not, if we don‘t close this year out with lots of wins, Drink’s seat starts to get just a bit warm. If you want to replace a guy who was an average HC, the way to do it is not perform like an average head football coach. That’s what he is at this point. Your record is what it is.
The thing is—-Drink is so close to building things that would really change the long term future.
Coach Drink is a very stubborn man——I know name me one HC who isn’t. He has a world of potential. He is learning and growing on the job. But when will we see the fruits of that?
His biggest weakness is on something he SHOULD be really good at——an offensive identity. We don’t really have it.
Things I would like to see change with Drink. More positive yards so we aren’t constantly in 2nd and 3rd and long.
Far too often we get behind the chains. If you are getting 3-4 yards on 1st down you are NOT behind the chains.
On 3rd or 4th and short——there needs to be a money play….something that you are confident will get the first down 50-75% of the time. Today, we had 4th and 2. Needed an absolute MONEY play. Didn’t get it.
I personally do NOT understand why we don’t run speed option in this context. It forces the opponent to make choices, commit and execute.
to the best of my knowledge we have rum speed option once this year. The result??? TD!!!!
So why don’t we run it more??? FORCE the opponent to STOP YOU AND MAKE A PLAY.
Biggest frustration with Drink is he isn’t aggressive like this.
FORCE THE OPPONENT TO MAKE A PLAY AND STOP YOU. Sadly, we are not aggressive and we often stop ourselves by trying to execute a higher risk play.
HAVE I MENTIONED THE SPEED OPTION WHEN YOU NEED A MONEY PLAY??????
