We barely beat a D2 team. That's terrible but my only real hope is that it was opening night jitters. That said there were some positives and negatives to be had.
Positives:
- Frankie Hughes might be the star CKA needs this year. Vision, Passing, Hustle, Shooting are way beyond what I thought he would bring. He plays like a top 50 player, we got lucky he fell into our laps
- Nikko and Smith weren't amazing but should be ok this year and gave me hope they will be quality big men in the years to come.
- TP is still one of my favorite players, just love his hustle. Plays like his hair is (was) on fire.
- Geist had some good moments and has a nice stroke. Had some TO's he needs to fix but not a bad debut
- Jackson will be decent this year but will likely need a year to adjust to college ball before he has a big impact
Neutral
- CVL was ok but still looks like he is having a hard time getting his shot off cleanly. Looks a bit better than last year overall but that's not saying much.
- Woods looked better but is still too short to be our center. Good effort guy but should be a power forward off the bench and not a starter at center IMO
Negative
- Puryear was a dud in the game. Got a few rebounds but couldn't buy a bucket. He also didn't make much of an impact during the Italy trip so I'm nit sure this is just a poor game.
-KJ didn't do much either. I vaguely remember someone saying he has been sick so hopefully that's it. I was surprised he didn't start but I can see why.
-The biggest negative is the disturbing way we just go into slumps for prolonged times just like last year
-I didn't see much of an offensive identity. Too much one on one and not enough passing and movement resulting in easier shots. We won because we had more individual talent and not because we outschemed UCM.
-Way too many stupid turnovers
Bottomline:
If Puryear and KJ come back strong and our team figures out how to play as a unit and avoid the turnovers we might be decent this year. We were playing a D2 team and it was a very narrow victory. Not a good sign, hopefully the Mules are really good and we just had an off night but I'm more worried now than before the exhibition.
