Other Mizzou NFL musings

1) I excluded him last week, but Beau Brinkley is still doing this thing at long snapper. He's going into his 8th season with the Tennessee Titans. The only active Tiger in the NFL with more seasons is Chase Daniel (11 seasons).

2) Nothing most of your haven't already heard, but Drew Lock hurt his thumb severely. The most likely course of action is for the Broncos to put him on IR and he'll be able to return around week 8. While the injury is unfortunate, I think it will help Drew in the long run since he wouldn't be thrown into a situation he might not be ready for.

3) The most interesting position battle going on is the backup running back battle in Houston. Currently, Damarea Crockett is battling with former Michigan Wolverine Karan Higdon for one of the final running back spots. Higdon appears to the favorite, but Crockett is impressing the staff in camp.

Through three preseason games, Higdon is receiving more snaps but Crockett has been more productive. See the stats below for the breakdown through three weeks:

To make the competition more interesting, starting running back Lamar Miller is out for the season with a torn ACL. The Texans executed a trade for Duke Johnson from CLE earlier in the preseason and that move is already paying dividends. The Texans are bringing in free agent Jay Ajayi for a workout, but as of this writing he remains unsigned.

Another factor to keep in mind is that Crockett is a much more physical runner than Higdon. I bring this up since the Texans already have a change-of-pace back in Duke Johnson and it makes Higdon's skillset slightly redundant. This will be an interesting battle to watch leading into week four.

4) Speaking of a players making the most of their opportunities. Marcus Lucas has a huge opportunity in front of him. Through two preseason games, he has eight catches for 90 yards. If one of the three(!) injured tight ends remain on the shelf going into the season, Lucas could be in position for either a spot on the active roster or practice squad.

5) Shane Ray is in what one coach described as a "dead heat" for one of the final roster spots. All signs point to Ray playing for his football life in Thursday's preseason finale.

6) I'll just submit this final thought without comment. Sean Culkin finds love (sorry for the Facebook video link)
