Saw a post earlier about us needing to run the Pistol more often to allow for more down hill running. That being said I have a few thoughts. I have seen every game we have played since about 2007. Over that time we started to run the Pistol from time to time. One thing I can tell you when we line up in that formation. We are going to run the speed option 9 time out of 10. It has been that way since we started it with Gabbert.
Now here is what I also know. When Franklin ran it you didn't know who was going to get the ball. Sometimes him sometimes he would pitch it.
With Maty I can tell you about %100 of the time he is going to pitch the ball. He does not know how to run a true option either speed or zone read. Never has and probably never will.
I don't say this to run Maty down but to state how predictable we have become. I don't analyze games and break them down but there are certain formation that I can tell you exactly what is going to happen. Line a RB up on the right hand side of Maty, check the sideline and move him to the left. He is going to run back to the right. They never hand the ball off and run to the same side the RB is already on. Why not?
If we see these thing there is no wonder that teams are already where we want to go all the time. We have started to telegraph our offense. Feel free to shoot holes in this theory but is just seems we only have limited options out of each formation. I think of the old I-formation. You could run 20 plays out of the same formation and never move a single player.
As far a Maty is concerned I said when he committed that he would be limited with handing off and running the read option because he played his entire career before college being the only back in the backfield. He has never gotten comfortable with it and that is why he runs best when he is alone in a 5 wide set. He is his own option.
Thoughts?
