INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Seven Mizzou Wrestling grapplers were given top-16 seeds as the brackets for the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships were announced by the NCAA on Wednesday. Nine wrestlers from Mizzou will compete in the National Tournament, held March 17-19 in New York City at Madison Square Garden.
Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) was the highest seeded Tiger in the field, coming in at No. 2 in the 197 pound weight class. Coming off his third consecutive Mid-American Conference title, Cox (28-1) will wrestle Rutgers’ Hayden Hrymack (17-14) in the first round.
Two #TigerStyle wrestlers, redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) and redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), each earned the No. 3 seed in their respective weight class. Butler (20-3), who won his first MAC title and second conference title overall (ACC Title in 2014) last weekend, will wrestle Oklahoma’s Matt Reed (19-9) in the opening round. Butler defeated Reed with a fall (2:14) on Jan. 30. Mayes’ (26-2) first round opponent will be Oklahoma’s Davion Jeffries (23-10) in a Jan. 30 rematch where Mayes defeated Jeffries, 4-2.
Competing in his first NCAA Tournament, redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) was seeded No. 4. Lewis (25-4) will face-off against Edinboro’s Casey Fuller (26-9) in the first round. Redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) was seeded No. 5 in his second NCAA Tournament appearance. Manley (28-6) will matchup against Penn State’s James Gulibon (12-9) in the first round.
Redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) ranks in at No. 8 in the 125 weight class. McGhee (21-7) will face Wyoming’s Drew Templeman (18-8) in the first round. Redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Atloona, Iowa) ranked in at No. 14 in his second NCAA Tournament appearance. Miklus (18-5) matches up against Oregon State’s Corey Griego (23-10) in the opening round.
Two Tigers, redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) and redshirt senior 157-pounderLe’Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.) were unseeded in the tournament. Synon (16-12) will face No. 12 seed Bradley Taylor (Wisconsin, 9-5) in the first round, while Barnes (26-9) draws No. 5 seed Dylan Palacio (Cornell, 13-1) in the opening round.
The tournament will kick off from Madison Square Garden at Noon ET on Thursday, March 17. Both sessions (first round and consolation round) on Thursday will be broadcasted on ESPN U and ESPN3. The morning session on Friday (quarterfinals/consolation) will begin at 11 a.m. ET and will be broadcasted on ESPN U and ESPN3. The evening session on Friday (semifinals) will be begin at8 p.m. ET and will be shown on ESPN2 and ESPN3. Saturday’s morning session (medal round) will start at 11 a.m. ET and will be shown on ESPN U and ESPN3. Saturday’s finals round will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN.
