.. is a myth. If you read many of the posts here, you would think that Missouri never runs anything except bubble screens and sweeps, with an occasional 5 yard out. It's not true.

@JAGsports made a good post in another thread, where he charted every one of the LA Tech plays, both running and passing. He found that we ran 26 East-West plays, and 54 North/South plays. 2/3 of the plays were vertical. Then people started questioning what constitutes a vertical pass and how it compares to other teams. So I wanted to build on his analysis.

I looked at the percentage of passes targeting receivers in 3 different areas.. Behind the LOS, 1-10 yards out, and 11+ yards out. The numbers are for the first 3 games of the season (excluding ACU game for Missouri since not avail yet). I also broke out the KSU game separately. Comparing to Georgia, Tennessee and Miss St because those are currently the top 3 Passing Offenses in the SEC.

% Of Throws to Target Distance
Behind LOS / 1-10 Yards / 11+ Yards

Georgia..... 33% 34% 33%
Tenn.......... 15% 53% 32%
Miss St...... 31% 46% 34%

MIZ (1st 2).. 21% 41% 38%
MIZ (KSU).. 13% 47% 40%

Two key takeaways that might surprise people:

1) Missouri targeted fewer receivers behind the LOS than any of those teams, except Tennessee. Georgia and Miss St both threw a significantly higher percentage of their passes to receivers behind the LOS

2) Missouri had the highest percentage of targets to receivers greater than 10 yards out, compared to the top 3 passing offenses.
