***EDIT...she RUNS TODAY at 2:15 CT***

Karissa Schweizer found just enough kick to finish eighth in her qualifying heat of the 5,000 meters Friday and advance to the final.

The former Mizzou runner stuck with the main pack throughout the first preliminary and fought off her closest challenger with a time of 14:59.64. American Elise Cranny was seventh in 14:58.55.

Schweizer will run in the final Monday at 2:10 p.m. St. Louis time along with Cranny and U.S. runner Whittni Morgan, who ran 15:02.14.
She will try to improve on her performance in the 2020 Olympics, where she was 11th in the 5,000 meters.

She also will run in the 10,000, in which she was 12th in the last Olympics.

Schweizer has rebounded from surgery last year for an Achilles tendon injury.
