I posted this in another thread, but wanted to get some general discussion going. You often hear analysts say "XYZ throws a catchable ball." What exactly is a "catchable ball?" When I look at Mauk's throws, he throws deep balls better than anything 20 yards and shorter. He has a torque windup, and throws really hard, but he doesn't spin it very well. I'm wondering if that matters. His short passes often wobble. For comparison's sake, lets talk about some other kids.
James Franklin threw really hard, but he could spin it as well as we've ever seen.
Chase didn't throw as hard, but threw exceptionally "catchable" footballs with beautiful touch.
BG threw it a mile and also fired short range missiles. He's actually a closer comparison to Mauk, but BG had pro-style mechanics.
Everett Gholson spins it as well and as hard as ANYONE in the country. He absolutely launches the football on all his throws.
I hope this is making sense. My HS WR/DB coach always said "if you can touch it, you can catch it" so I'm not excusing our drops at all. However, I'm wondering if "catchable" balls is worth discussion.
Lock throws a much smoother looking ball.
