Offensively we looked good, but we got a little conservative a few times in the 2nd half and it almost cost us the win. I still think we need to throw to our TE’s even more than we do.
Defensively, where do I begin. Losing Acy to injury right at the start of the game did not help, but our corners and safeties do not have great coverage skills. Not having Lee in the first half didn’t help either. It doesn’t help that we get no pass rush. We resorted to rushing 3 way too much and it gave their QB a ton of time to pick our secondary apart. Our lack of agressiveness on defense caused me to have several cussing tantrums during the game. I can’t live with getting torched deep when we only rush three D-lineman. Acy and Sparks are decent, but they are still pretty young and are not great athletes. Our dbacks always seem to have a problem looking back for the ball so they rarely knock it away. We played the run well tonight, but I can only remember about 5 or 6 run plays so that isn’t saying much. Terry Beckner doesn’t seem to always go hard on pass plays. He plays the run well, but his motor on pass plays is lacking. He does get double teamed some because our DE’s aren’t real tough, but I would love to see him go harder on pass plays. He should have 5 or 6 sacks a season.
We took some big chances on 4th down in this game, but then other times we were conservative. We all need to remember Dulle is still learning to call plays. I have done this job and it is not nearly as easy as everyone thinks.
At the end of the day this is a win and we are 3-0. There are several teams, Nebraska & Arkansas are two examples that would love to be 3-0. Purdue is much better than the teams that have beaten Nebraska and Arkansas.
