First off I am not a Chiefs fan. I had been for about 20 years in the 70's, 80' and 90's but jumped ship once the Rams landed in St. Louis. I still followed the team for a few years after that but the continued disappointments of promising seasons ending with playoffs failures ended my fandom. I know about the passion and emotional attachment Chief's fans have for this team because I was once one of you.
This past year on the evening of June 12th an event happened to me that I sincerely hope Chiefs fans get to experience around 9:00 pm on February 2nd: your beloved team lifting a trophy you never thought you would see in your lifetime. I know some of you are old enough to remember Super Bowl IV but many Chiefs fans have not seen their team reach that pinnacle.
Having the Blues win the Stanley Cup has brought me so much joy and emotional catharsis this past seven months. I had seen four Cardinal World Series Championships and one Rams Super Bowl victory but I am still surprised at how much I have savored the Stanley Cup run. I had been a fan of the Blues since the late 70's and much like the Chiefs, their playoff history over the past couple of decades have been filled with soul crushing disappointments. To finally win a championship that I had thought was only meant for other fan bases has been a dream come true.
This is were I hope long suffering Chiefs fans get to experience the same emotions and feelings Blues fans have had over these past months. I hope that when Roger Goodell hands the Lombardi Trophy to Clark Hunt you are with your family and friends so you can remember and enjoy those feelings for the rest of your life. I still get emotional at times when I see things that remind me of that glorious night in June. I hope you (except for a subset of Chiefdom that also supports an juco posing as a four year university with a woody woodpecker knock off as their mascot) get to experience a Super Bowl Championship and that God blesses the KC area with exceptional weather for the celebration and parade that will follow.
Sincerely from a St. Louis Raider fan,
Art Van Delay
