Simply put, Martin and staff might like the 2020 class more than the 2019 options?

We have been operating under the assumption that we would have 4 scholarships available for 2019. These were Van Leer, Puryear, Geist, and Porter. I believe we had 3 main targets, being Jackson, Watts, and Liddell. When Jackson committed to Minnesota we took Guess for this year. Once Watts moved on we committed to McKinney, and he committed to us. Now we've lost out on Liddell, meaning we have 2 spots open.

If you look ahead to next year, we are only scheduled to have one scholarship available (Nikko). I believe we might have promised a scholarship to Braun, which if true (and we honor it), we don't have anything available for next year's class if we fill this one. Yes there could be room made, but we would hope any attrition is minimal.

I guess what I'm saying is maybe Martin and staff prefer the 2020 options and are fine moving on to the next class after their top 4 or 5 targets are spoken for. Generally it's not smart to play for next year in recruiting, but I think it's possible that's what we're doing.
