Offense: The OL is already gelling. There is too much thinking, but I liked what I saw. Good pass pro. Decent run blocking. It will get better with more live reps. Alec has added strength. Samson was consistent all day. Kevin is just a nasty mauler. Paul did well. Was proud of him. Tyler was a little slow with his feet, but all in all, a very solid game. He's developing rapidly. Need to work on run blocking and getting to the next level, but I was pleasantly surprised with how these boys looked. Kudos to Coach Elarbee.
Kendall Blanton has grown into a high quality blocking TE. He may have had more reps than Sean and Jason. Good to see Sean get loose a few times. Hope to see Jason get more targets. He's a mismatch.
I know J'Mon is a lighting rod for a lot of folks, but he had a decent game. But for letting the ball get into his body once and misjudging a jump, he made some clutch plays. More importantly, he was blocking downfield. Love to see that. Chris Black has the potential to be special. I like that young man.
I am a fan of Alex. I love how he plants his foot, lowers his pads and gets positive yards. No dancing. No pirouettes. Just strong, down hill running. Ish looks stronger as well. The Augusta kid needs to stay on his feet. Maybe put a pizza buffet in the end zone.
Drew has really matured. He had some time and he made some throws. What I like was how he really dialed it in during crunch time. Some of the throws he made in the fourth quarter were mind boggling. Marvin has earned more touches. The kid has good wheels and even better balance and vision. I have to think that a few passes from him will loosen up defenses.
Kudos to Tyler Hanneke for being all over the field. He was the lead blocker on several of Marvin's sweeps and he was next to Josh in the super jumbo, biscuits, gravy and extra bacon package. Watch him. The kid is a beast.
Defense: The DL had its issues. Their entire offense was geared around Charles and they executed it to perfection. He was double teamed, chopped and ran away from all night. This will continue to happen until more folks step up. Beckner looks to be 90%, which is still better than a lot of players. Josh is Josh. People complaining that he just "clogs up the middle" don't understand the DL.
I thought the LBs had positives and negatives. The sideline to sideline range was there, particularly with Joey and Mike. We have to do better defending the slot and in gap management.
The back four were solid. We're catching the ball, which is great. Some solid hits from the safety position. Penton looks great. Kid plays with swagger and passion. Love that. Let's get 10 more like him. Same with Anthony.
Special Teams: Rough day for the true freshman kicker. He'll improve. Not Cory's best day, but he has a good track record, so give the kid some slack. Better tackling on P and K teams.
Overall today was a C+. Sure, there is room to improve, but we're on the slope and ready to ride.
