The NFL is trying out an alternative to the onside kick. Essentially, the scoring team gets a possession at their own 25 yd line and have to gain 15 yds. If successful, the team retains possession, if not (equivalent of a 4th and 15) the ball returns to the other team at the site of the end of the play.

They changed the rules to make this type of play safer and broke the play (kicking teams have essentially no chance to recover the ball now). Now they are trying to jerry rig a replacement. Seems contrived.
