kU fans in particular, and folks who live in KC in general, seem to feel that kU to the B10 is a laydown. A fait accompli. Maybe not. Here's why:
kU could be the next nebraska and the B10 likely wishes they could get a Mulligan on that one. The kU glory days may just recede quickly behind them. Like the nubs, the circumstances (though different) that led a very small market team in the middle of no place to national prominence are evaporating. Is kU, post the NIL revolution, going to lose their biggest advantage (money to handlers and athletes under the table)? MUCH more level playing field now.
The kU disadvantages the B10 has to be considering include:
Small market
An ever expanding cable TV universe
Geographical location
MAJOR investigation by FBI and NCAA (I think they're still around)
NO Football program = huge revenue loss - I think, at one time anyway, the B10 has a revenue formula that essentially pools their FB ticket sales money and then allocates it evenly across all the schools. Adding kU would = a net loss.
Also, there are other excellent options for the B10 to consider - How about wooing N. Carolina and Virginia from the ACC? Virginia is one of the top schools in America and they share a border with Maryland. And Virginia shares their border with N. Carolina - which is also an AAU member university. These two states have a population of 19M (vs kansas at 2.9M). The ultimate slam dunk for the B10 just might be Virginia and ND. Checks every box?
I wouldn't automatically grant kU their get our of the Mountain West conference card just yet. Just sayin'
