So Oklahoma State's AD Mike Holder decided to take a pot shot at his football HC Mike Gundy and his recruiting/success on a podcast. On the surface what he says seems fair. But OSU is a lot like Mizzou in the ability to recruit. Sure, the state of Oklahoma produces some dynamic players.... and teXas kids kind of see Oklahoma as being a good place to play since it is so close. BUT, OSU has OU and teXas (and aTm) to contend with.... and those reputations will be bigger than OSU's until OSU dominates for a generation. It's not a quick fix... and I hope the OSU AD understands this.
OSU's situation reminds me of our own. We cannot go into Oklahoma, teXas, Florida or Georgia and demand any player we want. We both have to scout around and dig deep to find the players that will come to our schools and be productive. Pinkel and his crew were good at that until they lost focus... BO seems to be good at it too. I would cringe if Sterk came out and made these kinds of comments... what a way to undermine your coach.
If this AD thinks there is a better way to get the job done, maybe he ought to do it... or find someone who will get it done. Until then, Gundy has been racking up the wins and reputation to go where he wants and do what he wants. I don't think I would be messing with him in public like that.
