When I saw the video of the kU players refusing to shake Mayfield's hand my first though was "It takes a lot to show less class than OU, but kU managed." But then Mayfield solved that over the next 4 quarters...

Now this article bemoans Mayfield being stripped of his Capitan title and not starting vs WVU... Poor Mayfield, he gave his all for the university and now his feeling are hurt.

I know this is new for OU fans, but there needs to be some line that you don't cross when it comes to tact and decorum. There needs to be some standard that a University will uphold as its own and be willing to enforce. Truth is, OU sets the bar very low... winning cures all... and it seems many fans buy into it... and now Murdock wants to set the bar lower because Mayfield got his feelings hurt because he lost control?

I have an 11 year old son. He is a good kid, a straight arrow. He hates to make mistakes. But when he messes up, violates the family standards, he gets punished. When he gets punished he gets upset, and sometimes that frustration comes out as tears. My response is not to coddle the tyke, but let him know this is a learning lesson, to pick himself up and realize this is not the end, and then to get back out there and do it right the next time. It's called teaching him up. It's called helping him mature into a man.

Shouldn't that be what coaches do for their players when they act like little boys? Even if it is only once in a while?

So how low Mr Murdock, do you set the bar? When is it ok to pull the player and slap him on the wrist and tell him not to act like an idiot. When is it ok to tell the leading candidate, for the biggest honor in college football, to act like a man and not like a pubescent jerk? How low do you go?

And what message is that sending to you star player? Your other players? The fans? And those young men who are dreaming of coming to OU to play ball and represent the University? Winning is everything? Character does not count?

Mr Murdock stated in the article that this is about protecting the University, and that the U failed the player... I would agree... but they failed Mayfield a long time ago when they condoned his actions instead of training him up.

Just think. For one brief shining moment, OU was classy and kU was the chump. Mayfield spoiled that for OU, and for that alone he deserves the slap on the wrist.

Peace
