A word of caution. These days I make one or two practices a Fall, so take this fwiw. Little.
Obviously, we know who the starter is, but the 2nd string competition looked a little tighter for me today. KB's words after the scrimmage I think kind of belies what you saw. A first team qb that was a little hamstrung by the playbook. AND the first team defense (more on them in another installment). KB hit the checkdowns because their wasn't a lot open downfield and he didn't have a lot of time for things to develop( the rush was.. steady). His one long completion came on a busted play where he reversed field and threw a strike over the middle to Kam Scott. His wheels will definitely be a factor this year.
Behind him is Taylor Powell. I've always been a TP fan. He does a lot of things right. He rarely gets flustered and always seems to know where he wants to go with the ball. He also seems the most comfortable of the backups, but that is changing. Taylor played well early, scuffled with throws for a bit and then hit on a couple of long plays late in the scrimmage.
He (finally) appears to have some competition in Lindsay Scott, Jr. As the qb's were warming up my first thought was this is as accurate as I had seen LS. He continued that play on the field and much like Bryant used his legs to make plays extending a couple of drives with scrambles. I think IF you were JUSt judging the competition of TP and LS on this one day it would be very close.
The final entry is the newcomer and as Gabe has mentioned you can see it as soon as he takes a snap. Conner Bazielik (sp) does not look like a freshman in the pocket. He looks to be a little bigger, a little faster and have a little better arm than Taylor Powell. He will need some seasoning but he floats well in the pocket and doesn't get hasty when he gets flushed out. Next years qb race is going to be interesting.
*One other note, I noticed Micah Wilson once at WR late in the scrimmage. He was targeted once, bu it was an overthrow across the middle (by Powell I believe).
