1880 - Last year a starting pitcher acquired by the Small Bears in the preceding off season, won on Opening Day
13 - Failed Cub AB's with runners in scoring position
9 - Lester became the 9th consecutive Cub pitcher, acquired in the off season, to lose an Opening Day start
8 - Hits surrendered by the Boy Genius' 155 million dollar man in 4 1/3 innings
7 - Combined hits for Carpenter, Hayward and Holliday
5 - Consecutive losing records for the Northsiders (and counting)
3 - Most hits in a game against a LHP in Jason Hayward's career (both games against Lester)
2 - Number of St Louis area pitchers in the Cub rotation (Jacob Turner & Jake Arrieta)….(hope their parents are getting a sizeable cut of their salaries to overcome the embarrassment & humiliation from neighbors)…BTW, Jacob is the brother of former MU catcher Ben Turner
1.85 - Wainright's career ERA on Opening Day
From Wrigleyville…..
Cub SS Starlin Castro's,(a guy who is regularly slammed for his lack of focus and concentration), post-game quote on the new scoreboard….
"That's what we do on the road, we watch ourselves on the scoreboard," he said. "Now we watch at home."
(Joe Maddon; smh)
Reports from the game indicated 20 to 30 minute waits for the few completed restrooms on the 100 Level, and those that were functioning were severely overused…
(If you have sat in the Pavillion in Wrigley on a hot August day, I'm not sure what's changed….that's what it always smells like…#traditionsdiehard)
Since the Yanks v Sox will not be compelling TV, I wonder if ESPN is still pleased with their obvious intent to hype the Cubs Cards rivalry, to replace it?
(Insert loveable loser Small Bears for Sawx….insert heartless corporate baseball Cards for Yanks in their cable morality play)….
One game does not a season make, but time to tap the brakes a bit on the hyperventilating on the Northsiders, and over promotion of the rivalry by the Four Letter? …..I think so
