Frustrating result to a spirited, though somewhat lacking performance.
Short version.
1. Best wishes to Tilmon and his family. His absence was a factor but it's secondary by a good distance in the grand scheme. Thoughts are with him.
2. With that, the home squad was a bit shorthanded. They were able to assert themselves early when Arkansas was sitting some key pieces with foul trouble. When those guys returned, the sledding got tough. Especially with X and Mitch battling foul trouble too. They each led the team at +7 while in the game. Not a stretch to say Jeremiah's absence was a factor. But, you play the hand your dealt.
3. Stats were fairly even except for one. Free throw shooting.
Arkansas: 20-23
Mizzou: 14-21
Seven misses loom large in a game this tight..
Mizzou was forced, or I guess chose, to take their attack outside and hit for 13-32 from deep. Arkansas attacked our light interior with some success. We had a couple more to's but compensated with a couple more second chances on o boards.
Numbers are just about as tight as you can get, save for that one category. And it burned them.
4. The difference wasn't just Tilmon being gone. It messed up the rotations. Watson and Mark both spent significant minutes guarding vanover and smith in big size matchups. Others helping opened up cutting lanes with Arkansas executed on well. Not entirely sure why Kobe was awol late.
5. Watson and Braun weren't all stars by any means, but their contributions were big. Each had 26 minutes, 3rd most. They weren't perfect but made some nice plays. Good for them.
6. As I said Wednesday clunkers happen. How you respond is the key. I don't think there was a carryover, but it wasn't an A performance either. It was "decent." Decent wasn't good enough
Thiss week will leave a mark. Unless you were holding out hope that the SEC was still in play (I wasn't after bamas win at usc, and probably not before), this is a seeding issue. For whatever we'll get of the SEC and then the NCAA. They're gonna drop a bit. Flip side, I think Arkansas is probably safely in now.
7. Finally, it hurts to lose on the Rally for Rhyan day. The first time. The good that comes from the day is beyond the game. For any with loved ones battling (or who have) the cruel disease, it's great to see communities coming together to fight it. Bless all of you who find yourselves, or family/friends, in that fight.
