An incredibly frustrating outing.
I've seen enough of Ole Miss to know that they can defend it really well. Mizzou gave a pretty good outing on the defensive end, allowing less than 1 ppp.
But Mizzou simply was not good enough for significant stretches.
Consider
From the time mizzou shot two technical free throws in the first half at 9:27 to the 16:56 mark of the second half:
18 possessions
7 points
2-15
4 turnovers
The last 5:26 of regulation when game was tied
9 possessions
5 points
2-9 fg
2 turnovers
That's damn near a half's worth of game play and the Tigers tallied 12 points on 4-24 shooting with 6 turnovers.
In nut cutting time, they failed miserably.
Ole miss did a good job of limiting transition opportunities, slowing the pace using the clock, switching defenses and making winning plays. They were a desperate team. They get some credit. They're not a great matchup stylistically. All true.
But damn, this game was sitting on a silver platter and the home squad just turned their nose up at it time and time again. Incredibly frustrating to see our group not be able to take control of the game. Missed bunnies, bad reads, lackadaisical offense. Was a great example of how NOT to play confident, attacking offense. Even when they needed to just get a shot off, pounding the ball on the ground and nothing.
The officials allowed this to turn into a brawl, but 4 second half free throws is proof positive they weren't aggressive enough. They played hard, they just didn't play aggressive. There's a difference.
Props to the front line for playing hard and relatively effectively. Mark, Tilmon and Kobe combined for 33 on 13-24, 20 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks.
The other 113 minutes played by 7 guys? You can do the math when we finish with 53 on 20/57 shooting.
Anyway, nothing else beneficial to say. Tonight sucked ass.
Out.
