Georgia is first with Mark Fox, Yante Maten and Turtle Jackson
Fox: League has so many good teams, every game is a battle. Found a rhythm on defense in the first half.
Maten: They were patient offensively and finding the open man in the first half which led to the run.
Maten: Ignored the emotion in the arena and just tried to play their game.
Maten: Difference from the first time they played Mizzou was to match the physicality and be patient.
This is a terrible press conference. These guys are saying nothing interesting at all.
Fox: Doesn't think Mizzou changed the offensive scheme drastically. "In that kid's defense, it's awful hard to play your first couple college games. He didn't practice for most of the year and he had to come out and play in a high level college game...I've got a lot of respect for him even trying to do what he did today."
Fox: Thought the game was well officiated.
Fox on his freshmen: Kantavius Caldwell Pope was the 8th pick in the NBA Draft and they could barely play him as a freshman. Kids take time to grow.
Fox on the start: They were off mentally and emotionally. Needed to fight through it and get back to what they do well.
Fox: Maten is a better person than he is a player. "It's been a joy to coach him."
Fox: "Yesterday wasn't a very physical game at all so I feel like we were very fresh today."
Missouri up next. Will be Cuonzo, Kassius and Michael.
MIZZOU
Maten did a great job setting the tone making plays, getting to the line and getting rebounds.
MPJ: Felt good to be back out there. "My whole thing coming back was to be able to help the team."
Kash: Huge not to be able to take advantage of the early lead. "We had shots that weren't falling that usually do."
Kash: "I think we did a poor job of fouling and we put them in the bonus really early. I think it was more about the defensive end. Overall we played good defense, but like I said, just the fouling part."
MPJ on Maten: "He's a good player. You've got to give him credit. He put his team on his back, but it was fun guarding him."
MPJ: Great to see Jontay. He had a pretty good game offensively. Proud of him, fun to be out there with him. "He's the only one that really had a good offensive game. We played, to me, besides him, about as bad offensively as we have all year."
Kassius: "Frustrated that they were losing. I'm not really worried about the touches. We weren't losing because I wasn't touching the ball. That's not the reason."
Cuonzo: Didn't change the offense much. Had a few things they wanted to run for Michael, but was mostly the same offense. Tried to set Mike up in situations where he could catch and shoot rather than having to create his own shot. Foul trouble changed the plan somewhat.
Cuonzo: Thought the shots Mike took were good shots, might have rushed them a little bit. Need to get him in the post a little bit more.
Cuonzo: Good thing is you've got the first game out of the way. Don't think he took a lot of bad shots. Energy and UGA defense were the main factors.
Cuonzo: Had an opportunity to win the game, not what Mike did or didn't do. Barnett and Robertson had bad days shooting, UGA defense played a big part in that.
Cuonzo on Jontay: Biggest key in the last month is putting in extra work.
Cuonzo on the last play: Geist did a great job of delivering the ball.
Cuonzo on Kassius: Role didn't change. Took three shots in the first half. Didn't do a good job getting the ball inside. Refocused to get him shots in the second half. Wanted to establish a presence down low. Only had two guys take free throws, which isn't enough.
On UGA: Seeds don't mean anything this time of year. Maten is one of the best players in college basketball. First time he's ever been in a league with this much parity.
