When you open your season going 1 and 4 with the only win over an FCS team, things can get testy

REPORTER: “Given the penalties (the Illini are 122nd) and lack of discipline you talked about, do you have any sense that maybe you’ve taken it too easy or been too relaxed with the team to this point?”
SMITH: “Ask me that question again. Are you freaking kidding me? Ask it one more time. You think I’ve been too lax with our football team? Like I’m freaking going out there every day just letting them do what they want to do? Absolutely not. I’m not going to give that question an answer. Lax with a football team? Are you freaking lax with your job? I’m not either. Thank you.”
The Illinois lost 34-31 to Purdue last week and travel to Rutgers this week. The Illini defense is allowing 30 points per game, and Smith was also asked if he’d get more involved. He didn’t love that question, either.
“I am involved in the defense, alright?” Lovie said. “As far a what I need to do, I’m OK with figuring that out by myself, but I am involved in all phases of our team. The things we don’t like, it’s on me, and we’ll continue to work to fix them.”
