I have been one of the posters that did not want to start Lock, to stick with Mauk at QB. I was convinced that a Freshman would make too many mistakes and I would rather stick with the devil you know. At least Mauk could run the ball and find a way to move the ball. Lock proved me wrong on Saturday, and I'm pleased to have been surprised. I would rather be wrong and have Mizzou win games.
However...
It seems to be that MM's issues are with his decision making and a lack of desire to make the short throw. Did Lock really make throws that MM couldn't make? I know what the Mauk haters will say, but the greatest thing that Lock did was stick to the game plan. He made first read, simple short throws over and over, and his statistics looked great. He listened to his coaches, didn't try to do too much, and followed a plan.
And here's the rub: Why won't MM do this? I can't say for sure but I really doubt that MM's passes were all designed to be 25 yard, check down, third receiver pass plays. If MM would simply stick to the game plan, maybe his numbers would be better and we would not have lost to KY. It is my opinion that Mauk can throw the short ball, I am guessing he has just refused to do it.
Ignoring the obvious suspension and the infractions committed: I would love for MM to come back, execute a game plan, run the ball like he is capable, and move this offense to the end zone like a well coached upper classman. Based upon what I have heard, I don't see it happening. It looks like I will be satisfied with a good freshman QB that seems to be humble, coachable, that runs a simple offense and sticks to the game plan.
