Question for the board about Ethnicity

I am working on a press release for a client. The client is a refugee who escaped Uganda during Idi Amins "ethnic cleansing"

So I am describing my clients, they aren't really black (per media description), more like middle eastern looking.

Curious how I can describe them. I don't think I can describe them as "African American" refugees, right?
