Since we're all looking at these coaches at group of 5 schools, I started to wonder how these leagues stack up. We all have a general idea, but there's some things to consider here when picking coaches.
Here's how the leagues rank according to Sagarin:
1) AAC West (Includes Norvell and Fritz). According to Sagarin this division is actually better than both divisions of the ACC which is a complete joke of a league this year. Tulane, at 6-6 played twice as many top 30 (four) teams as Missouri did (two) and finished with the same record.
2) Mountain West - Mountain Division (Includes Troy Calhoun and Bryan Harsin). According to Sagarin, this division is only slightly less competitive this year than the ACC coastal which is the worst Power 5 conference.
3) AAC East (includes Fickell and Huepel)
4) Sun Belt East (includes Drinkwitz)
5) Mountain West - West Division (includes Norvell)
6) MAC West (includes McElwain)
7) Conf USA East (includes Healy and Lane)
8) Sun Belt West (includes Anderson and Napier)
9) MAC East
10) Conf USA West (includes Holtz)
The point here is when we look at some of these coaches records, we should take into account who they are playing. Going back several years, conference USA West has consistently been the worst FBS league and most years it is ranked worse than the Missouri Valley which is the best FCS league. Holtz really has done a good job at La Tech, but it should be noted that league is bad. Same goes for Napier and Anderson this year.
On the flip side, Fritz at 6-6 really should get more credit.
