Things that stood out to me
Our interior dline men, NT & DT on several plays were one yard behind the los. Some plays just one of them. I think this allowed WVU linemen to get more drive on run plays and more space to pass block. Especially since when they pass, the ball is either out quick or the QB has taken off to run. This also took our D ends out of a pass rush mostly. Harris got some pressure. In addition the DE's, at least at this portion of the game, look like they're stance at the snap is much different. They were not set to fire off as far up field as we saw last year. At least that's how it appears to me.
Harris is quick on the snap but everyone else is noticeably slower than him. Slower than last year it seemed. Almost like it was intentional. Also they went away from him a lot. He played contain well. Overall he did his job with few opportunities.
Augusta got lots of double teams. Gassed quickly. Pad level high. Looked more like a space eater than a penetrator or pursuer. Frankly he was off the ball over a yard on the snap, slow off the snap and his pad level was so high that he got moved a good bit imho. Logan played less during this stretch. Some of the same but a bit more aggressive I think.
Not one single stunt by the front 4. None of the more complex looks we got from the front last year. Not one single pre snap shift. Just basic DE contain on thr outaide and straight ahead push on the inside.
Beckner to me still showing his talent. I can't tell for sure, he might be a half a step behind because of the injury or it could be this different approach I'm seeing. His ability to over power is still there. His pursuit still looks very good. He still looks like a future first or second rounder too me.
After watching again up to this point the defense didn't play badly except for a few plays during the 3rd possession where WVU got 7. It's a much different looking approach from last year as far as I can see.
That's most of my impression this far thru the first 4 series. I'm gonna watch more tomorrow and post my thoughts.
