We still need an impact RB in this upcoming class...and there IS ONE in state up the road at Hannibal high school...Aneyas Willams, currently committed to Notre Dame.
I have seen this guy up close and personal the past two years in both football and track and this guy is a special athlete.
He has very good (but not elite) track speed (11.01 100m 22.19 200m) ...but that is not what makes him special imho. He is incredibly strong and powerful for a guy his size and he has exceptional balance, vision, and over-all athleticism.
What makes a running back special? In my opinion it's being hard to tackle. Over 50 years of watching HS football...I have never seen a running back more hard to tackle than Aneyas Williams.
He can run over most people...he can make you miss...his vision and cutback ability are exceptional...and his speed is very, very good. Besides that...his hand eye coordination and ball skills are exceptional!
Watch him in pregame...he catches everything easily and naturally...he can throw, punt, pass, kick...the guy is a rock solid 200 pound tightly compacted mass of solid muscle.
I have always said that best HS football player I have ever witnesses with my own eyes in person was Tim Dwight when he played at Iowa City HS (later for Iowa then a 10 year NFL career). Aneyas Williams is BETTER imho....not as fast...but a better overall football player.
NOW...can we get him? I'm not sure...but it's sure worth a try. Coach Drink should put the FULL COURT PRESS on him and make him feel highly valued and do everything he can to get him to switch.
When I talked to Aneyas last Spring at a track meet...he wasn't 100% opposed to the idea even though he was already a Notre Dame verbal at that time.
He said the main reason he committed to Notre Dame was because they told him he was going to be THE GUY as a true freshman. Why couldn't Drink sell him on that?
This guy is special and right here in our back yard...I sure hope we make a push to get him to take a visit...I really think we might be able to flip him...it's certainly worth a shot.
We desperately need an elite back...and I'm telling you there IS one right here in our backyard. He is a Cody Shrader with much greater speed. GO GET HIM COACH DRINK!
