at the Columbia College Gym as Coach Anderson was mic'ed up for a Mizzou practice as the Missouri HS Coaches observed at the MBCA Clinic pm Thursday afternoon.
Many of the younger HS coaches around me commented that Mizzou didn't look very impressive as far as size and athleticism.
A couple of older coaches whom I respect greatly said they were hearing that this team is miles ahead of the last two years in terms of being a TEAM with good chemistry and everybody pulling in the same direction.
A couple of guys actually watched the team in Europe and said they were much improved and pretty impressive over there.
Cullen VanLeer has obviously made strides in the weight room and looks strong and athletic and really has a nice stroke...maybe he is ready to break out this year?
Reed Nikko (Freshman from Minnesota) looks HUGE might actually make a contribution as he has a liitle bulk to go with his height and actually showed some promise imo.
Jordan Geist looked small (listed at 6'2" 180...appeared more like 6' or 6'1") but he did look quick, tough, and agressive and showed a few flashes of the intanibles his Juco Coach Gillespie gushed about.
I am not a basketball guy...but liked what I saw...and especially what I heard from some of the of older BB Coaches who seemed to be connected and in-the-know about the program.
They don't think we'll be world beaters by any stretch of the imagination...but very much improved because of the chemistry and type of kids and the way they hustle and play together.
Kemp and Smith both have some much needed height and length... but need some more bulk, physical maturity and skill development before they can be BIG difference makers..although they can and will HAVE to contribute some this year.
Jackson looks VERY athletic and Puryear and Woods look stronger and better....if only Kemp, Smith and the huge Frosh Nikko can all contribute in spurts.
I actually hold out hope that we can be an above.500 team this year with a pretty young roster that just needs a couple of bonna fide stud 2017 recruits to make us a legitimate tournament team in 2017-18.
Perhaps it is all wishful thinking on my part...but I can see Mizzou basketball showing a pulse this season.
I think the product on the floor will be better...and perhaps significantly better this year...time will tell.
