Used the Sagarin Ratings instead of conference records since that eliminates some of the disparity between East and West and who played who. The ratings are of the rosters on opening day, so that only includes kids on the roster and their recruiting/transfer rankings. Pretty interesting.
The two most underachieving teams (LSU and Florida) fired their coaches.
The other 2 "underachieving teams" had 1st year coaches, which generally tells you that while the rosters may have had "talent", it was either misevaluated or underdeveloped by the prior coaching regime.
10 of the 14 teams finished within 3 spots of their "talent" ranking. Coaching certainly matters, but only on the fringes. You have to recruit at a certain level to break through a certain level.
Also, here is how everyone lined up nationally in "talent":
1. Alabama (1)
2. Georgia (2)
5. LSU (3)
7. Florida (4)
8. Texas A&M (5)
14. Auburn (6)
19. Tennessee (7)
22. South Carolina (8)
27. Ole Miss (9)
28. Arkansas (10)
30. Mississippi State (11)
31. Kentucky (12)
46. Missouri (13)
59. Vanderbilt (14)
