With 13 of the 14 teams having already played, this is a good time to look at week one. The SEC can not be happy with the 6-5 non-conference record. I'm just going to look at the major offensive categories and total defense. I will not delve into fumbles, interceptions, etc.
Let's start off with a trivia question. Which SEC team is currently ranked (in the conference) #3 in total offense, # 2 in passing yards, and #5 in rushing yards? Answer at the end of this post.
In the fooling list, I give the SEC and FCS1 rankings. In week #1 (excluding the Ole Miss game), Georgia is #1/47 in total offense, #8/92 in passing, and #1/18 in rushing. Tennessee is #8 total offense, #7/83 in passing, and #7/85 in rushing. Florida is #7/80 in total offense, #3 in passing, and #9/95 in rushing. Also, Kentucky is #5/67 overall, South Carolina is #9, Vandy is #13, Arkansas is #10, and LSU is #12. This is out of 13 teams in the SEC and 125 teams overall.
Bottom line: Mizzou stands at #3/51 in total yards, #2/34 in passing, and (yes) #5/58 in rushing. And, this was against a pretty decent opponent on the road. In the SEC, Kentucky and Mississippi had bad loses while Tennessee and Arkansas had narrow escapes.
Looking at the SEC East, the Tigers have a real chance. Mizzou has the potential of a very good passing attack and a decent rushing game. The major question is will these parts come together by Sep 17. Georgia will be a tough game. At this point, I'd have the Dogs -17, but an upset is not impossible. Reminder: Georgia has Auburn and @Ole Miss and Tennessee has Alabama and @ Texas A&M for cross division opponents. These will not be easy games, but i do think Georgia has the easier schedule. If Mizzou upsets Georgia, 6-2or even 5-3 could win the East. Tigers can't afford to look ahead, but Sep 17 is a huge chance for Mizzou. Go Tigers!
