self defense.... where is the line?

Guns aside, how do you protect yourself and others when threatening situations arise? Do you have the right to protect yourself and others if you have special training? Or are you now considered the weapon? Where is the line for when you can defend yourself?

I don't know all the facts about this situation, none of us do yet. But I have been in those subways when people get aggressive and when they start demanding and getting in people's faces... when can you respond? And what is appropriate force when you're trapped in the tube with no means of escape?
