The organization I work closely with, Missouri Disability Empowerment Foundation, is nearing the end of our largest fundraiser - CoMO Gives. Our primary goal at the moment is running FREE Special Education Advocacy Clinics across the state. We’ve had clinics in CoMO and Moberly and have one scheduled for St Louis and Springfield in the next month or two. We’ve formed relationships with advocates and attorneys across the state and also with Mizzou Law and they have an extern starting this spring. There are very few attorneys qualified for these cases and almost all require a retainer and cases likely will run near $10k at a minimum. It’s cost prohibitive to families. Our organization has helped a parent file a case and is trying to educate and empower families so it doesn’t have to go that far. I’m currently taking a zoom special education advocacy course from an attorney that only practices out of state and takes cases without retainer because he’s that good. Due Process cases almost always favor the schools. You all see my arguments a lot. This is why I fight. This organization was formed by 6 moms in CoMo sitting around a table wanting different for kids with disabilities. We appreciate any and all help .
