Basketball has changed. Nowhere is more apparent than the ongoing extinction of the mid-range shot. Good or bad, teams driven by analytics are favoring shots at the rim and 3 point shots over mid-range attempts. This started in the NBA and has filtered down through to college. The following graphic depicts the change in visual form:
Through three games, we can look at where Mizzou's shots are coming from and their shooting percentage at each, as well as what they're allowing their opponents to do...
Mizzou's Offense (national ranks; 1st highest; graded against "average opponent")
3 Point Attempt Rate: 64th
3 point make percentage: 257th
Long 2 Attempt Rate: 193rd
Long 2 make percentage: 187th
Near 2 Attempt Rate: 210th
Near 2 make percentage: 2nd
Mizzou's offense is perimeter heavy comparatively speaking, but shoots relatively poorly. "Long" 2's are not a feature of the offense and while Mizzou is not shooting a ton of near rim shots, they're incredibly efficient when they are. The goal would be to increase outside shooting percentage, of course, and to try and drive up the near range take percentage.
Mizzou's Defense (national ranks; 1st is lowest number; graded against "average opponent")
3 Point Attempt Rate: 150th
3 point make percentage: 47th
Long 2 Attempt Rate: 308th
Long 2 make percentage: 23rd
Near 2 Attempt Rate: 23rd
Near 2 make percentage: 84th
This is what you're wanting to see from a defensive perspective in terms of shot selection if you want to buy in to shot charts from an analytic standpoint. Mizzou allows a fair amount of 3's, but look at the 2's. Very few looks around the rim and a large share of shots being taken from the midrange, and a very good shot defense at that location.
