First off, Barrett is a player Missouri has liked for a long time. They offered him basically before anyone did. The Tigers and Oklahoma both offered on July 25 last year. The staff believes he’s a top 50-75 player in the country.
He’s got great size for a guard and very good speed/athleticism. His best attributes, especially early, will probably be his ability to drive and defend. He can play the point, but like pretty much all the guys Dennis Gates is going to sign, he’s just a guard. He can bring the ball up, he can play off the ball. Gates is never going to take a guy and pigeonhole him into just one of those roles. Which means that, yes, Missouri will still take Bishop Boswell (more on him tomorrow) if he wants to commit—or any other guard in the 2024 class.
Barrett recently took a visit to Oklahoma and chose the Tigers shortly thereafter. The Sooners and Oklahoma State were probably the biggest competition. He’s not a prospect who ever really blew up and started collecting a ton of Power Five offers, but he’s a guy who’s had a pretty good summer and who Mizzou was in on early.
It also never hurts to get a MoKan kid and a Link Academy kid. Barrett will be spending his senior season in the backcourt with Columbia native Aaron Rowe. Among the other players on the roster is 2025 standout BJ Davis-Ray, who Missouri’s staff really likes. Can’t hurt to have Barrett in the fold and talking to players like that on a daily basis.
Missouri will have no more than six scholarship players and no more than three guards (Curt Lewis, Tamar Bates, Anthony Robinson) returning for next season so Barrett’s a guy who could figure into the mix early. Obviously, though, there will be plenty of activity to follow not just on the traditional high school recruiting trail, but also in the portal, before then.
We’ll run down some of the priority targets for the rest of the 2024 class tomorrow in the Chamber.
