Didn’t have any insight about Mizzou specifically, but did have some good stuff on Lane.
First and most importantly, he said that he expected Lane to be on the move this offseason. We all probably already knew that, but he said that the AD has been expecting this to be Lane’s last year in Boca for a while and that everyone there is on the same page re: Lane leaving.
Said that Lane is a great recruiter and, even though he has a great reputation for it, is probably still underrated in that regard. He’s done a great job of mixing in some second-chance guys from bigger programs as well as landing high school kids that FAU has no business getting. Said he’s a media darling and well-liked by donors. He’s been great for their fundraising efforts the last couple of years.
Said he was really impressed with some of the things Lane did on offense, but would need some major help on defense, again something we already knew.
I asked him if he thought that Lane had grown up at all from his days at Tennessee and USC. He said that he didn’t really think it was a maturity issue, but that it was just a big part of Lane’s identity and he is who he is at this point. He’s not humble, he loves the camera, and he loves himself some Lane. Again not a surprise, but a relevant note for those hoping he’s mellowed out over the years.
Said that the rumors on campus have it that Lane loves the college girls. Said that contributed to Lane’s divorce and since the divorce, Lane has been a bit lacking in discretion in that regard. Said the AD is happy to have made it through his tenure without anything hitting the headlines.
Not a ton of new info, but some good insight from someone who has followed Lane closely the last couple of years. Sounds like he’s the same ticking time bomb as always, just one that hasn’t exploded in a while. This donor seemed to think he’d do well at the next level, but there are enough red flags there to make me think I’d rather see him at Arkansas than Missouri.
