I notice that some still think Odom should be replaced if he runs the table. That will never happen.
Others have established in their own mind the barometer that Sterk should use ..6 wins..5 wins.. competitive in all etc. Some said Sterk should make a decision based on who he has talked to behind the scenes and some think he should use his judgement to retain or fire BO based on his view of the future.
I’d never heard of Sterk until he was hired and never really looked at his coaching hires. Since hiring our BB coach was soon accompanied by MPsr and jr., and then Tillman and Jontay...I put Ste4k down as a veritable coach hiring genius.
Anyway I looked up his football hires. He seems to have hired 3 football coaches in the last two stops , two at Washington State and one at SAn Diego. At WSU, after their best ranked finish ever mike Price quit to go to Alabama. Sterk promoted the DC, Bill Doba, who did well in year one but then went downhill. He coached 5 years with poor records except for first year. In 2007 Sterk fired him and replaced him with Paul Wulff, a head coach from Eastern Washington, who failed to win more than 4 games in any of his 4 years before being fired by Sterk’s successor at end of 2011 season and hired Leach. Sterk went to San Diego State in 2010 with Wulff still HC.
At San Diego State, Brady Hoak quit in 2011 to go to Michigan and Sterk named Rocky Long, the DC as HC. He has done very well in his division of the Mt West Conference.
The sample size is very small. But you can see two out of three times he did the same thing Mizzou did..elevated the DC to HC. He only fired one coach, that was the DC he hired at Washington State after 5 years, first year great and then 4 lack luster to poor seasons . The only outside hire he made , was an abject failure that was fired by his successor who brought in Mike Leach.
If you read about Sterk, you read about the improvement of the overall athletic programs including the non revenue sports and his fund raising and leadership. The AD does a lot that is not recognized or at least given credit by knuckleheads like most of us worrying about his coach hiring prowess.
But as to thinking that Sterk has a clear vision of the future when hiring a football coach, there is no real evidence of that. One promoted when the team was highly successful, failed, his hire to replace him failed worse. The one he promoted at SDS has done well, but he had quit as HC at New Mexico State a few years before.
So he has never fired a coach in less than 5 years. He has never identified an outside hire for the fb program that worked out. But there was only one of those. He has batted 50% on moving DC to HC.
The whole thing is a crapshoot and I’m sure nobody is more aware of that than Sterk. Baring a return to the early season debacle imo he is extremely unlikely to make a change. Look for an extension and vote of confidence.
