BAA's and by the impression Sterk gives off when he speaks publicly is a smart guy. I simply laugh at all you amateurs who don't get what JS was doing. His bosses on board gave him a set of parameters saying we want to get a winner but we want to pay X which was most likely NOT enough to get the type candidate they said they wanted. Saw it all the time in my recruiting career where you wanted to test your bosses or hiring managers to find out what they truly wanted and were they willing to pay the cost of what they wanted. did it literally hundreds of times myself. So you intentionally bring them a list of middling coaches that don't excite or a bunch of resumes. He got just what he wanted as BOC's said these arn't going to be good enough. He counters with well if you tell me you want that bright young potential superstar who has a great resume but not the experience you demanded at first then this is who I can get but everyone else does too and will cost you a lot more money guaranteed than you wanted to pay. After that suddenly more money became available and he could go land a Eli who is the bright shiny object out there that checks all the boxes but is green as a HC.
Damned smart of Sterk if you ask me. Instead of just another guy with little potential to make a splash he gets an upgraded HC. Is it risky? of course but then he will make it or not at MU with this hire as FB is the driving revenue force. If he is a bust he's gone anyway so why not force the Putz's on the BOC to go big or go home. Just my take as someone who knows the hiring process intimately but without many thousands of folks staring at their computers waiting for news about it.
