Picked up on some recruiting tidbits and other random comments regarding Drink, Odom, and the program in general from previous STL targets and those in the 2021 and 2022 classes:
Demetrius Cannon (2021 WR Trinity) - Heavy Penn State lean. Really enamored with James Franklin and the amount of receivers they put in the league. Current Mizzou commits Macon and Wingo are on him hard about joining them at Mizzou, but Cannon seems fairly disinterested about the tigers. Mentioned how hard former WR coach Garrick McGee tried to get him to commit last year, but pretty much said McGee was a clown of a coach and Mizzou doesn’t produce receivers.
Tyler Hibbler (2021 Safety Trinity) - very much Pro-Mizzou and I wouldn’t be shocked if he is the next STL area player to commit to the good guys.
Toriano Pride (2022 CB Lutheran North) - mentioned the lack of corners Mizzou produces in the league and how bad Mizzou’s corners have been the last few years. Obviously still fairly early in the process for the 2022 guys, but Toriano did not seem real high on the Tigers.
Mekhi Wingo (2021 DT DeSmet) - one of the biggest recruiters for the tigers along with Macon out of the current commits. Loves how they send a defensive lineman to the draft nearly every year and wants to continue Dline Zou. Also mentioned how Odom would not offer him last year at Mizzou because he was too short. Said Drink came right in and offered him, then Odom turned around 4 hours later the same day and offered him at Arkansas. Let’s just say that did not sit well with Mr. Wingo’s opinion on Odom.
Other random tidbits mentioned:
- To put it mildly, the general consensus from most of the STL area players was that they hated Odom and the “whole staff was trash,” specifically noting their disdain for Cornell Ford.
- The one staff member from Barry’s staff they did mention liking a lot was Brick Haley
- Reggie Love (2020 Trinity running back, currently at Illinois) is not surprisingly one of the most outspoken STL players against Mizzou (never offered). He’s not afraid to let these 2021 and 2022 guys know all about his choice words for the Mizzou program.
- Regarding Drink, it was mostly positive reviews noting his energy in bringing the “NewZou to the Lou.” Some players said he hasn’t put anyone in the NFL and he won’t be better than any other coach was at turning Mizzou around.
- New staff members that most mentioned really liking were Curtis Luper and Charlie Harbison. Several pointed out how Harbison had coached Brian Dawkins previously.
- A few players were referring to recently offered 2023 DeSmet Tight End Mac Markway as “Bama commit”. I don’t think it was meant literally, but I got the sense he’s gonna be too big-time for Mizzou.
- A lot of the area players believe Travion Ford is a little overrated and not even one of the top 5 defensive lineman in STL this year
- I would be shocked if Isaac Thompson isn’t headlining Mizzou’s 2022 class
- Many believe Jay Maclin will be playing in the NFL when he’s done at Mizzou
