Have been able to confirm a late added weekend visitor. Iowa grad transfer guard Tony Perkins arrived in Columbia last night.
Perkins is listed as a 6-4 shooting guard. He can play both guard spots. He was primarily a point guard for Iowa this season. He averaged 14 points, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds for the Hawkeyes. He shot 47% from two-point range, but just 30% from three. I asked a friend who covered all four of his years at Iowa about him.
"Streaky shooter. Good midrange game and bouncy around the rim. Can be a good defender."
Honestly, he sounds to me a bit like Sean East. Not necessarily a natural point guard, but he can play the point and did so pretty well for the Hawkeyes this year. Can also play off the ball. More of a midrange, get to the rim guy than a jump shooter. But the biggest difference is probably ball security. East averaged 3 turnovers a game this year, Perkins just 1.9. He had about a 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio. He was among the top 300 players in the country in assist rate, steal rate and fouls drawn per 40 minutes (4.7).
My Iowa guy told me Perkins isn't going to be the best player on an NCAA Tournament team, but he's very capable of being your second or third best player for a tournament team.
Pretty confident this is Perkins' first visit since he just hit the portal on Tuesday. He's going to land at a high major somewhere for his fifth year.
Will keep you updated if we pick up anything else.
