How many 1st or 2nd year players are playing significant minutes? It seems like most of the kids I see out there are really young which tells me we have very little upperclassmen pulling their weight. That might be a reason for the penalties and mistakes that have plagued us this year.
I hate to say it but Odom needs to take over the defense and bring back our old scheme if the current players can't do the new one. It might. It make a difference but it's been a clear problem this year.
