1. Thomas Wilson, Terry Beckner, Cale Garrett, Palmore, Cheadle, and Reese were the best players on the field. We do not have a field leader on this team. With regard to the back 7, Wilson should never leave the field.
2. Heupel didn't keep his poise. USCe played 2 deep for 99% of the game. We had the recipe cooking in the first half, then went away from it. Moore and Mason blew it....flat out. Lock's interceptions were mind numbing
3. USCe's defense was nothing to write home about. They didn't do anything to stop us. We did a fine job of helping them.
4. We don't have a single player who can get to the QB. The attrition at DE flat out hurts.
5. Waiting for an explanation on Crockett not playing in the second half after going 19 for 87
6. Odom should have shown some leadership by benching Moore after 2 back-breaking drops
7. 3rd down sucks.....on both sides of the ball
8. There's no leaders on this team......ANYWHERE
9. Home field advantage.....not so much
10. We're not very fast on defense
The football stuff:
USCe respected our offense and we blew it. They sat in 2 deep for 99% of the game, and we didn't take advantage of it. They played the majority of the game with 6 players in the box, but we didn't make Lock a runner, which would have blown the game open. We finally worked the seams with Reese.....but never went back to it. No corner routes, no deep outs, no drags, no crossing routes, and no flats. Mason dropped the deep comeback. Moore dropped the post and the slant. No route combinations to take advantage of the 2 deep look.
Lock has to be able to make a play. He's "the guy" but he doesn't give me hope like I felt with Smith, Daniel, Franklin, and even BG. When we need a play......we need to be able to look to him to make it.
Heupel had the recipe.....he just stopped cooking. It's like he wants so bad to get Lock's numbers, he doesn't just stick to attacking the defense. The middle of the field was WIDE OPEN ALL NIGHT! We averaged 4.8 ypc, and didn't run 60 times. That should have been the objective.
We kicked the ball to the ONE player on their team who should never have touched it.....and he burned us.
Tackling still struggled.
The safety rotation is working my nerves. It's time to pick the guys who are gonna grow....and let them grow. Go with Wilson and Ulmer, and let them gel. I don't even think Ulmer played tonight.
Cale Garrett played fairly well. He still gets caught up in traffic, but I'm sure he made at least 12 stops. He made a couple decent strikes, but he isn't a striker. I've yet to see him dominate, but I believe he can.
Prewett isn't working. Drop him back to SS and pair him with Wilson. Problem is....Hall and Lee aren't very good. Burkett and Beisel are **meh** at best.
TBJ is the most active defender. He, Garrett, and Wilson should never leave the field.
Acy played better, but made a costly PI.
3rd down was a nightmare.....on both sides of the ball.
There's nobody on this team that knows how to win......including Odom.
This offense could be completely unstoppable. SHOULD be completely unstoppable. The defense......well, that's a whole other conversation.
