Trying to get this done before boarding the flight home. So here we go
1. College football should award someone a second place trophy. Call it the UCF Honorary National Championship. Because Bama is stupid. They won 29-0 over the No. 3 team in the rankings on the road at night. Remember that Bama defense that wasn't all that good? LSU had 195 total yards. It ran for 12 yards on 25 carries...with a long of 11. So the Tigers had 24 carries for ONE yard. Crown em.
2. Everybody else has flaws. Oklahoma survived against Texas Tech. Notre Dame survived against Northwestern. I think Clemson and Michigan are probably playing the second and third best football in the country right now. The Tigers hung 77 on Bobby Petrino, I assume hastening his firing from Louisville where the Jeff Brohm watch will soon follow.
3. Dana Holgerson has huge juevos. After a touchdown that brought the Mountaineers within 41-40 of Texas in Austin with 16 seconds left, Holgerson went for two. Will Grier ran it in on what looked like a designed QB draw that he bounced outside. Good for him. That's a coach you can get behind. Also, no coach in any sport more reminds me of Bill Murray's character in Kingpin.
4. Washington State just keeps getting it done. The Cougs were held down by a game Cal team, but managed a 19-13 win in overtime. They've got Colorado and Arizona left before the Apple Cup with Washington. I still don't think Wazzu can get in the playoff without a good amount of help, but all it can do is win every game. Also, East Carolina transfer QB Gardner Minchew has the best mustache in college football (Google it, I'm short on time and skipping links or pics this week).
5. Can we please stop the UCF in the playoff stuff? First off, I hope they make it. I want to see Nick Saban and Tua stomp on their throats over and over and over. But they gave up 40 to Temple. They barely beat Memphis, which got rolled by Tulane, crushed by Missouri and pushed by East Carolina. UCF is a good team. They've won 22 in a row and that's awesome and they deserve credit. There is absolutely zero chance they are one of the four best teams in college football. Zero. If they played in the SEC, they'd win eight games. Maybe nine. But probably not.
6. The ACC Coastal is a dumpster fire and maybe the worst division in major conference college football. Pitt beat Virginia on Friday night and now leads the division. Here are the standings:
I'm sure one of those teams can give Clemson a great run in the ACC title game. Speaking of awful divisions, the PAC 12 South would like a word please.
7. The slipper no longer fits Kentucky. This is not a surprise. I picked Georgia by three touchdowns and the Bulldogs would have done that had they not fumbled a couple times. Kentucky is a very good team and a great story. It just doesn't have the weapons to keep up with the elite teams. And that's okay. Your season doesn't have to end in a conference title game or a playoff to be a success. The Cats have Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and Louisville left. There is almost no way they won't win ten games. The worst bowl they'll be in is the Capital One Bowl. That's a damn fine season in Lexington.
8. My Heisman ballot as of today:
Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
Kyler Murray, Oklahoma
Josh Allen, Kentucky
Allen has no chance to win it. But I think he's the best defensive player in college football and I like to throw my third place vote to somebody I think deserves it.
9. The playoff if it started today:
1) Alabama vs 4) Michigan
2) Clemson vs 3) Notre Dame
Other teams with a chance: Oklahoma, Georgia, Washington State, Ohio State, West Virginia, UCF. Kentucky and LSU are out There were 12 teams alive last week. Ten teams to go now.
10. Five games I'll watch next week:
Mississippi State at Alabama, TBD: The Bulldogs can't win. But maybe they can make it interesting for a half? I mean, probably not. But maybe?
Auburn at Georgia, TBD: The Tigers might save Gus Malzahn's job with a win. They would also knock UGA out of the playoff. I don't think either will happen.
Ohio State at Michigan State, TBD: Sparty could wreck the Buckeyes. I hope they do. Then I hope Ohio State beats Michigan and the B1G is left to watch the CFP at home.
Washington State at Colorado, TBD: Can the Pirate keep hope alive for one more week?
Clemson at Boston College, 7 pm, ABC: Clemson can't afford a loss. That's how terrible the ACC is. I think they win...but BC has won some big games at home over the years.
