Yes, I know there is a game today and a game tomorrow night, but this is a Sunday story and it's Sunday today so I'm writing it now. Anyway, for those who are in their first year here, or those who have forgotten, every Sunday I'll post ten thoughts on non-Mizzou games from the week.
1. Hello Mr. Rosen. UCLA freshman QB Josh Rosen may be the nation's player of the week. He completed his first seven passes and finished 28-35 for 351 yards, 3 TD and no interceptions. In his first college game. Against Virginia. This wasn't a patsy cupcake. UVa isn't great, but this was a power five team. And Rosen was phenomenal. The Bruins will be the sexy pick to come out of the PAC-12, which is at worst the nation's second-best conference.
2. Let's not call it the Wrecking Crew just yet....but people who were saying John Chavis would make a difference in College Station look pretty smart this morning. Texas A&M throttled a good Arizona State team and Chavis' defense gave up only 17 points. That's like a shutout considering what the Aggies have been defensively in the last few years. Now, look, I'm not sold on A&M just yet. I mean, I watched them put up a crazy debut last year and then end up middle of the pack and I think that's certainly possible again. But it was a pretty impressive win that should put the Aggies in or near the top 20 this week.
3. Injuries suck. Particularly the one to Taysom Hill, which has the BYU quarterback missing the rest of the season for the third time in his career. Also for Scooby Wright. The Arizona linebacker is having surgery and is supposed to miss a month. Better than the whole season, but a lot of people believe he's the best defensive player in college football. Tough blow for the kid and the Cats.
4. BYU managed to overcome the injury for a day though. Just in cased you somehow missed it:
Too bad the kid couldn't kick it to a teammate.
5. kansas lost. That, in and of itself, is not newsworthy. What is newsworthy (or if not newsworthy at least relatively hilarious) is a pair of videos this week that prove two things:
A) kansas is terrible at football and most kansas fans do not become sports fans until basketball tips off
B) Rivalries are fun
6. Completing the "teams Mizzou fans love to hate holy trinity weekend" how bad is Texas? The Horns lost 38-3 to Notre Dame. The game wasn't really that competitive. Texas threw for 103 yards. It ran for 60. It averaged approximately three yards per play. I do not envy the folks at the Longhorn Network who have to put a highlight package together that will fill Charlie Strong's show this week. I do not envy the folks at the Longhorn Network for many reasons. This is just one. (On a side note, throw in the fact that Penn State lost to Temple and a number of my least favorite college football teams had bad weekends, which is okay by me).
7. Two teams I'm not quite sold on yet: Tennessee (you know my feelings on the Vols) scored 59, but it gave up 30 to Bowling Green and this was a close game for a while. Oregon scored 61, but it gave up 42. To Eastern Washington. Hmmmmm.
8. Checking in on future opponents: Arkansas State lost 55-6 to USC. UCONN beat Villanova 20-15. Vandy lost to Western Kentucky. Let's not make too many judgments off week one, but there are some serious soft spots on this Missouri schedule.
9. Nobody got more screwed than Colorado in week one:
At least it didn't happen on fifth down.
10. Week two games I'm looking forward to:
*Still one week one game. I don't think tOSU/VTech is going to be real good, but I'll watch it tomorrow night.
*Oklahoma at Tennessee. I think the Sooners show UT it's still a ways away. If not, oh man, the Tennessee hype train is gonna make the Drew Lock hype train look like somebody's cute little electric train set in the basement.
*Kentucky at South Carolina. One may be a contender (or at least improved) in the East. The other may not be. Big early season game to separate some of the wheat from the chaff.
*Oregon at Michigan State. Love early season matchups of top ten teams. This is a game that could have major implications on who gets in the playoff...and actually help BOTH teams' cause.
*LSU at Mississippi State. LSU didn't get to play this week. MSU looked decent not great. Again, an early season separator in the SEC.
*Boise State at BYU. If Boise wins, the Broncos will likely be favored in their last ten games and if they win them all we have to have the same old debate about whether they belong in the playoff. Go Cougs.
