1. Looks like time has finally run out on The Hat. Les Miles did a ton of good things in Baton Rouge. But it appears that the natives have finally grown too restless. After the latest clock snafu, it appears only to be a matter of when, not if, Miles is out at LSU. Local media is calling it.

Lost in the loss, perhaps, is a phenomenal play on the game-winner that wasn't.

2. Speaking of schools that have fired really successful coaches...I wonder how long it will take before Georgia fans realize maybe running Mark Richt out of town wasn't the greatest idea they have ever had. Because Ole Miss ran the Dawgs right out of Oxford yesterday. The 45-14 Rebels win proved two things we already should have known: When it's right and plays a full game, Ole Miss has enough talent to beat absolutely anyone in America. And Georgia is average. Again, we should already have known both of those things, but just in case there were some of us who thought otherwise.

3. The SEC East has a legitimate, no doubt front runner and you're not gonna like it. I know what the feeling is on Tennessee. I get it. At halftime yesterday, I was right there with you. But Josh Dobbs looked like the QB some think he is and Derek Barnett played like the DE everyone knows he is and the Vols hung 38 straight on Florida and ended an 11-game losing streak and put the rest of a pretty poor division on notice that the Vols are the team to beat in this division. Not a guarantee they'll win it, but they're absolutely the favorite.

4. This week's challenger to Alabama in the SEC West is...Texas A&M. Last week it was Arkansas, this week it's the Aggies, next week it might be somebody else. Everyone wants to ask every week who the team is that can take down the Tide. And don't get me wrong, A&M is better than I thought and very well might be the second-best team in the division. It doesn't mean that any of them are good enough to beat Alabama over the course of an eight-game schedule.

5. Duke beat Notre Dame in South Bend and it's not even basketball season. And I love it. The Irish has lost three games in September. So has USC. Notre Dame, USC and Oklahoma is 3-8. Wake Forest alone has more wins than those three teams combined. This pleases me. I like new blood.

6. Your Jekyll and Hyde team of the week is Wisconsin. The Badgers are now 2-0 against top ten teams after whipping Michigan State 30-6 in East Lansing. And in between, they had to fight and claw and use their backup quarterback to survive at home against Georgia State 23-17. College football, man. You just never know.

7. The play of the week comes from Colorado wide receiver Bryce Bobo

That play was the winning margin against Oregon. The Buffs beat the Ducks (and their actual duck-like uniforms) for the first time in 18 years. Colorado is 3-1 and the only loss is a road game at MIchigan which they led for a decent amount of time. The Buffs could be bowl eligible after the next three games (Oregon State, Arizona State, USC, none of which are actually very good).

8. My top five if I had a vote, (which I don't):

1. Louisville
2. Alabama
3. Ohio State
4. Houston
5. Michigan

9. My Heisman ballot as of today if I had a vote (which I do)

1. Lamar Jackson
2. Christian McCaffrey
3. Dalvin Cook
4. Trevor Knight

10. Five games I want to watch next week:

Stanford at Washington, Friday, 8 pm, ESPN--Winner has the inside track in the PAC 12 North

Tennessee at Georgia, Saturday, 2:30, CBS--Vols win this one and they put the SEC East on somewhat of a stranglehold.

Wisconsin at Michigan, Saturday, 2:30--Don't know what channel, probably ABC. Winner is the biggest threat to Ohio State in the Big Ten

Memphis at Ole Miss, Saturday, 6:00--I don't THINK Memphis is good enough to pull this off in Oxford. But I have just enough doubt that it wil be interesting to watch.

Louisville at Clemson, Saturday, 7:00, ABC--Winner might be No. 1 in both the polls and the Heisman straw polls on Sunday
