1. The greatest moment of the weekend happened in Columbus, OH...after Oklahoma got done dog-walking Urban Meyer and Co. 31-16.
The Sooners have the best win anybody will get in the non-conference season and Baker Mayfield is going to start turning up atop the way way way too early Heisman straw polls after going 27-35 for 386 and three touchdowns. For the first time ever in his coaching career, Meyer coaches a team that has given up 350 passing yards in consecutive games.
2. Speaking of the too early Heisman talk, don't forget the guy who won it last year. All Lamar Jackson did is put up 525 yards of total offense in a 47-35 win over North Carolina and generally remind America he is a certified badass. He'll be held to an unfair standard because that's what voters do with returning Heisman winners. I don't think the team around him is as good...which should actually make his chances better, but will probably make them worse.
3. Back to the Big 12, the league had a pretty decent weekend. Oklahoma State and Kansas State beat Patsies. TCU destroyed Arkansas. Oklahoma won at tOSU. That's four legit top 20 teams in the conference. I think the Big 12 has a much better chance to be in the playoff this year than it has in recent years.
4. So this happened and I'm pretty sure it's a record that will never be broken because it's almost mathematically impossible:
From second and goal to third and 93. Bananas.
5. James Franklin, that was COLD. BLOODED.
Good. I like it when coaches show some fire and personality. Screw throwing flags when guys dive in the end zone. Let them have fun. Sports are, after all, supposed to be fun, right? Let's encourage more haymakers in press conferences. Good on you James Franklin.
6. Georgia had a pretty gigantic win, getting a field goal with 3:39 to go to upend Notre Dame 20-19 in South Bend (I don't think I want to call it an upset, because I don't know what the point spread said, but I think UGA is the better team). The kick was made by Rodrigo Blankenship. And that might not have been the best part of his day
7. It was a good day for Michigan directional schools. Eastern Michigan won 16-13 at Rutgers (which reportedly is in the Big Ten, but that still doesn't seem right to me). Then this happened.
You'll tell me I shouldn't laugh because Missouri's not very good, but I really don't care, I'm laughing.
8. Speaking of things that are funny.
Baylor has lost to Liberty and UT-San Antonio. They are at Duke next week, then get Oklahoma, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas and West Virginia in successive weeks. 0-8 is possible when the Bears go to Lawrence on November 4 in the battle for 9th place in the Big 12.
Hey, Mack, how's Waco?
9. The defending champs are still good and, my word, do they have a defense.
Jarrett Stidham, who was supposed to be like John Elway and Johnny Unitas combined from what I heard, threw for 79 yards. Brent Venables can coach defense a little bit.
10. If you didn't stay up for #Pac12AfterDark, you missed a doozy. Boise State, led by Kansas transfer Montell Cozart coming on at quarterback in relief, had a three touchdown lead on Washington State in Pullman with ten minutes to play. The Cougars then scored 21 consecutive points, including a pick six on a shovel pass--which was actually one of TWO shovel passes that were intercepted in this game--to force overtime. It ended up going three overtimes and, sometime after I fell asleep, Wazzu and Mike Leach had a ridiculous 47-44 win. Nice way to cap a weekend of college football.
