Let me preface by saying that I anticipate getting attacked by several for this thread as I know many of you say that he (and all the other pre-season mags) are GARBAGE.
Thus...read on...only if you choose and are curious as to what he has to say (which is all I am...just curious)
I don't think any of these magazines and polls are gospel...but I am interested in the perceptions and opinions of others outside our little circle.
I know Phil Steele has picked us low the past few years and he is far from perfect.
That being said...I DO think the guy does more homework and compiles more stats as a basis for his predictions than anybody else in his field.
I read most all of these publications...not to get ground breaking info on the Tigers...but rather to get "cliffs notes" information on all the other teams and to see what the PERCEPTION is nationally about the Tigers.
PHIL STEELE PREDICTS:
Picks Mizzou to finish 24th in the nation (coincidence that that was the average he posted on an earlier blog for all the other prognosticators? LINK : http://philsteele.com/Blogs/2015/JUNE15/DBJune08A.html)
Says we may be favored in 10 of our 12 games this Fall after being a Dog in 7 of our games in 2014.
Says he would "not rule out our chances of an SEC East three-peat...but none-the-less picks us 3rd in the SEC East (behind Georgia and Tennessee).
Picks us #12 on his list of 14 schools listed as 2015 "SURPRISE TEAMS" and says we have the "SOFTEST SCHEDULE" in the SEC.
On his pre-season ALL SEC teams he picks the following Mizzou Tigers:
1st Team: none
2nd Team: Boehm and Brothers
3rd Team: Augusta and Brantley
4th Team: Mauk, Hansbrough, Scherer, and Dennis
Over all he picks SEC teams (nationally) also in his Top-40 as follows:
4th-Alabama, 6th-Georgia, 10th-LSU, 14th-Auburn, 20th-Ole Miss, 22nd-Arkansas, 25th-Tennessee, 32nd-A&M, 39th-Mississippi State.
His POWER POLL which is a combination and average of his famous 12 sets of "power ratings" tells us just how good he thinks all 128 teams are...but not necessarily how they'll finish (according to his top 40 above) because of varying degrees of schedule strength.
His actual POWER POLL (which tells you how good he thinks each team really is) ranks as follows for the SEC teams and Mizzou opponents:
3-Alabama, @ #7-Georgia, 10-LSU, 14-Auburn, 15-Ole Miss, @ #18-Arkansas, vs #19-Tennessee, 31-Missouri, 32-A&M, vs #38-Mississippi State, vs #40-Florida, neutral site in KC vs #44-BYU, vs #56-South Carolina, @ #58-Kentucky, @ #77-Vanderbilt, @ #87-Arkansas State, vs #102-UConn,
He picks us to play Texas in the Advocare Texas Bowl at the end of the season (and Texas is 33rd in his top-40 and ranks 28th in his actual Power Poll.
Is all this stuff worthless? More than likely...but I still think it is interesting to read what the guy says who does the most homework and compiles the best sabermetrics rankings of all the teams in the industry.
I am not asking anyone to agree or disagree with anything either he says or with my opinions on his work...just trying to post some interesting numbers to generate some good discussion.
